La Plagne Guide

The modern resort of La Plagne is a group of separate villages which all link up to form one of the largest skiing destinations in the world. Each location has its own merits and caters well for different budgets and varying skiing abilities.

  • Montchavin – one of the lowest of the La Plagne villages at 1250m (4,101ft). It is a quaint and relaxed little resort, built in the style of a traditional old farming village.
  • Champagny la Plagne – also based at 1250m (4,101ft) has a lovely Apline village feel. It sits right on the edge of the Vanoise National Park, close to the ski resorts of Courchevel and Les Trois Vallees.
  • Plagne Montalbert – rests slightly higher up the slopes at 1350m (4,429ft) and is one of La Plagne’s smaller resorts. It mainly comprises of self-catering apartments which are built in traditional Savoyarde style.
  • Les Coches – one of La Plagne’s quieter resorts, is slighter higher at 1400m (4,593ft). It is a fairly new skiing village which offers great value purpose built ski apartments and chalets.
  • La Plagne 1800 – so named because of its position at 1800m (5,905ft). A pretty village, set amongst some stunning scenery across the valley, this proves a popular setting for family skiers.
  • Plagne Bellecete – a small resort offering mostly apartment style accommodation. Situated at 1930m (6,332ft) it has great piste access, with lifts just a short walk away from most apartments.
  • La Plagne Centre – placed at 1970m (6,463ft) is one of the original purpose built resorts of La Plagne. It is a good choice for low budget accommodation in a central location.
  • Belle Plagne – one of the highest resorts at 2050m (6,742ft). This car free village mainly consists of apartments and hotels, which have been specifically designed for a convenient ski in / ski out location.
  • Plan Villages – perches at 2050m (6,742ft) and is another of La Plagne’s original resorts. Its location offers brilliant access to the slopes for both skiers and snowboarders alike.
  • Plagne Soleil – one of La Plagne’s newer resorts, is located at 2050m (6,742ft). It is another excellent choice for doorstep skiing accommodation.
  • Aime la Plagne (or Aime 2000) – is higher up the mountain at 2100m (6890ft). The location provides stunning views towards Mont Blanc, which is just a mere 25 miles away. Another resort for great doorstep skiing.

Skiing In La Plagne

The skiing area of La Plagne is enormous and caters brilliantly for every skiing ability. It is a great choice for beginners, with a large number of nursery slopes to practice on, along with excellent ski schools for tuition. As confidence grows, even the most novice of skier can enjoy some leisurely ambles along one of La Plagne’s 140 ‘Easy’ runs.

La Plagne is served well with an efficient interlinking set of 141 lifts – including 1 funicular, 10 cable cars, 4 gondolas, 66 chairlifts and 58 drag lifts. Wherever you choose to stay in La Plagne, you will be near to the speedy Vanoise Express cable car, which is located in Les Coches. This gives intermediate and advanced skiers a fast link to the nearby resort of ‘Les Arcs’ and the chance to access the massive Paradiski ski terrain. Covering 425kms of piste, this is one of the largest skiing areas in the World.

Nightlife In La Plagne

You are really spoilt for choice for nightlife in La Plagne and each village has its own nighttime hotspots. However, here are just a few of the many highlights:

‘La Tete Inn’ (Belle Plagne) is a great bar which uses old milk churns for seats and stays open until 4am. ‘The Spitting Feathers Bar’ (Plagne Bellec�te) is an English style pub with themed nights and a sports screen. ‘Le Luna Bar ‘(Plagne Centre) has 4 bars, each with a different theme and is a great location for late night drinks. If it is a nightclub you are looking for, try ‘Oxygene’ (Montchavin) or ‘Galaxy’ (Champagny). Look out for the courtesy buses which are operated by some of the late night bars and clubs which will drop you back home to many of the Villages in La Plagne.

Eating Out In La Plagne

Restaurants are many and varied throughout all the villages, there are simply too many good ones to list. Whichever you choose, make sure you taste the traditional local fare of fondue and raclette, this is usually priced around €20 per person.

Other Things To Try In The Area

Those seeking the ultimate adrenaline rush will not want to miss riding on the Olympic Bobsleigh (La Plagne 1800). For those looking for something more relaxed, opt for the Cinema (Plagne Centre and Bellec�te) which show English films regularly.
