St Johann Guide

With sixty kilometres of refined piste to try, St Johann has nineteen downhill ski slopes which are accessible via seventeen ski lifts. The ski lifts include the eight seater Bauern-Penzig gondola and the six seater gondola on Harschbichl, as well as fourteen chair and drag lifts; therefore as there is a combined hourly capacity of 20,400 people there is no waiting around for lifts. The winter season here starts at the beginning of December.

St Johann is situated at the base of the lofty Kitzbuheler Horn and Wilder Kaiser mountains plus it is only a short distance away from Kitzbuhel and the Schneewinkel Ski Pass which is valid for use on fifty four ski lifts and allows you to visit all the other resorts which make up the Schneewinkel resorts – including, PillerseeTal, Waidring, Kirchdorf and Fieberbrunn.

An alternative is the the Kitzbuheler Alpen All Star Card Ski Pass, which will give entry to an amazing 1081 kilometres of slopes and 347 ski lifts. St Johann caters predominantly for families and has teamed up with the neighbouring resorts of Kirchdorf, Oberndorf and Erpfendorf to ensure that the region is kept family friendly throughout.

St. Johann prides itself on its great mix of excellent skiing, service and hospitality plus accommodation which makes it stand out from other resorts. Even the uphill transport links are superior and have been carefully planned out to enhance the skiing experience.

It often snows more in St. Johann during the winter than neighbouring ski resorts in the region due to its location near the Wilder Kaiser and Kitzbuheler Horn. With this in mind, the village’s altitude does not affect the snowfall and should not deter avid skiers.

Skiing in St. Johann can be accessed from several alternative points which are all situated on the outskirts of the village. Do bear in mind that if your accommodation is not close by, then a brisk walk or the free ski bus will be required. At one end of St. Johann at Eichenhof a long drag takes you to the top of the mountain where a relatively quiet nursery area can also be found.

Another access point is at bungslift Baumoos which is close to the train station and features a nursery slope. The quickest way to get straight to the top is via the Hauptkassa at the base of the gondola which is the main access point. The Hauptkassa is located about 700m from the centre of the village. A drive over to Oberndorf can take you to another route via gondola.

There are excellent ski instructors at St. Johann’s ski school and children can be taught from the age of four upwards with the relevant club, depending upon their ages. St Johann is a four star choice for beginners and intermediate skiers, with intermediate skiers probably getting the best out of the interesting and variable terrain.

Expert skiers will also enjoy the resort but can find much more challenging runs at nearby resorts including the Penzing run down to Oberdorf. St. Johann is also the main snowboarding resort in the region due to its interesting terrain and nightlife. The extensive pass coverage of over twenty four other ski areas nearby contributes to the success of St Johann as a haven for some of the world’s best known snowboarders in recent years. All ski schools here offer snowboarding tuition.

St. Johann is a lively village and boasts a varied and active apres ski there are in excess of fifty bars and restaurants to choose from and to suit all tastes and ages. Perhaps you could try out ‘Bunny’s Pub’, ‘Max Pub’, ‘Buren’, ‘Chez Paul’ or ‘Huber-Brau’ tower. Food ranges from pizza to traditional three course meals.

Other amenities available include great shops, supermarkets, cleared walks, alpine flights, excursions to Innsbruck and Salzburg as well as a regular fifteen minute train journey service to Kitzbuhel which offers great nightlife and a casino.

This area of the Schneewinkel is by no means short of alternative activities to sample. Some of the fun on offer ranges from swimming in an indoor pool, sauna, massage, gym and solarium,an ice skating rink, curling, indoor tennis, bowling, floodlit tobogganing, romantic sleigh rides, night skiing, paragliding, turbo tubing or bob sleighing. All in all there is something for everyone to attempt.

St Johann is a first class resort which deserves a four star rating for intermediate and beginners and its family friendly initiative.
