Galtur Guide

This small village is a lot quieter than its neighbour Ischgl. For families the facilities at Galtur are superb and it has a charming Tyrolean atmosphere. The Silvapark ski area here in Galtur is only a five minute bus ride away from the village. You will find pistes of 40km and specific areas for young kids and teens. There is off-piste and free riding, plus winter walking and cross country skiing.

The 40km of slopes are made up of six kilometres of intermediate blue runs, 24km of advanced red runs and 10km of expert black runs. These slopes are extensive, high, snow sure and ideal for intermediate skiers to cruise some of the best intermediate terrain in Austria. The ten ski lifts of Galtur are able to carry 15,000 skiers or snowboarders per hour.

By using the Silvretta area lift pass, nearby Ischgl is easily accessed by using the complimentary ski bus. Taking about eighteen minutes the journey gives you access to a super ski area which includes 330kms of pistes, some fantastic off-piste action and what has to be a selection of the best snowboarding in the Alps.

This was one of the first Austrian resorts to introduce snowboarding in the Silvretta area. In 1991 it hosted the European Cup here. Galtur also has its own fun park and a number of chair lifts that are ‘boarder friendly’. The more experienced boarders, however, will no doubt want to add some action and utilise the facilities available in Ischgl. This will ensure they enjoy all that Silvretta has on offer. This will include the snow park with a half pipe located in both Kappl and also at Samnaun, across the border in Switzerland which is one of the biggest snowboard parks in Europe. It is here they have a 90 metre half pipe which is awesome!

Activities

There are many other activities to try whilst in the resort. They include ice skating, sleigh rides drawn by horses, bowling and curling to name but a few. You can also enjoy the sports and cultural centre which has an indoor swimming pool with water jets and a huge slide that is 45 metres long.

Galtur is a great place for families. There are two kids ski school areas. Dwarf World has a magic carpet, slide, an igloo and a very easy slalom run for the younger children. Adventure Land has a fairy tale forest and a giant slalom run.

For families with children that don’t ski there is a Guest Kindergarten. This is for children aged from two years old. It is open Sunday to Friday from 9.30 am to 12 am and again in the afternoon from 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

Galtur has introduced a refund service for guests. It will refund them if the road to and from Galtur is shut because of the danger of an avalanche. They will pay for alternative accommodation for the time the road is closed.

Nightlife

The Apres Ski in Galtur is quieter than neighbouring Ischgl but with loads happening if you know where to look for it. There are a few very popular places to go for good Apres Ski. The Almhof-Tenne at the Hotel Almhof is one and the Platzli to be found at the Hotel Ressle is another. As the evening progresses there’s more Apres Ski going on down at the Pyramide Hotel Luggi and also over at Tommy’s Garage. There are seven late night spots in total in Galtur, these are: Hubers Stadl, Bierkessel, Postillion, Pyramide, S’Platzli, Almhof Tenne and Tommy’s Garage.

If you are looking for really lively nightlife it is best to take one of the late afternoon buses or an early evening bus and go into Ischgl. Here you have much more choice in the way of lively bars and international restaurants. Party people from all over Europe can be found here enjoying the atmosphere. The Brits, the Swiss, The Swedes and The Germans are frequent visitors for Apres Ski fun.

Accommodation

The accommodation in Galtur is less expensive than in its neighbour Ischgl. The choices range from basic bed and breakfast accommodation in a comfortable guesthouse, self catering chalets and apartments through to four star first class hotels.

The traditional atmosphere can be experienced in one of the local restaurants with home-made food, the hospitable mountain huts and the welcoming cafes.

Galtur is a great choice for a family holiday. You will experience a friendly atmosphere, traditional spirit and peacefulness on the top of these Tyrolean heights. The experience of Galtur is also a very healthy one too. Crystal clear fresh mountain air and the pure serenity right in the heart of the Alps.
